The gap between the demo and the delivery
Steve’s starting point is one most marketing and procurement teams will recognise. AI-driven content is being bought as if it is simple, and it isn’t. Demos are controlled environments. They do not show what happens when the work scales, when the brief changes, or when an asset has to hold up across multiple markets. The cost of putting things right when the system misbehaves never makes it into the pitch.
Where it goes wrong
The piece names a pattern Collective sees repeatedly: assets that impress in isolation but turn out not to be reusable, pipelines that struggle with liquids, transparency, or complex packaging, and IP terms that look clean until you try to adapt the work. The “fast, cheaper” option often ends up costing more than the traditional route. Not because anyone made a bad call, but because the information feeding the decision is incomplete and focused on the wrong metrics.
Steve calls this a governance gap: the space where marketing ambition and procurement logic drift away from the operational reality of AI content.

What the brands getting it right do differently
They ask better questions. Who owns the assets? What breaks at scale? Can the work be reused globally without rebuilding it? What happens when you want to switch tools? The piece sets out a clear principle: keep a brand-owned master layer of product truth above any vendor workflow, test real-world performance rather than controlled demos, and judge cost by reusability, not output volume.
The fix is not a transformation programme. It is a thin, practical layer that keeps the product truth, master assets, and standards owned by the brand, so new tools can plug in and partners can change without starting again.
